Lalita Sharma was born in Kolkata, India. At the age of eight, she started learning the intricacies of South Indian classical Carnatic music from her guru, Padma Narasimhan in Kolkata. She trained for eight years and later studied at the Government Music College, Adyar, Chennai, where she passed the Sangeeta Vidwan course with distinction in 1986 and later obtained a diploma in Music Teaching. She strengthened her knowledge by completing her B.A. in Music from University of Madras in 1990. For three years, she also underwent rigorous training in music under Prof. V. R. Krishnan, noted disciple of Sri Semmangudi Srinivasaiyer.
